“Wake Me in Antiquity” is a monumental oil painting that reimagines the first story ever told in African history. the Kemetic myth of ASAR ASET AND HERU. The scene is set in the regal tranquility of ancient Nubia yet seen through a modern lens of diasporic memory and cultural reclamation. Set against the sacred steps of a temple, the original Madonna and child— Aset, with her sister Nebthet are adorned in royal garments and golden jewelry—- they move with quiet purpose as they flee from Set, the evil brother of her now slain husband Asar. Amongst stone lions and sacred ibis birds are symbols of divine protection and wisdom, which guide her on this antecedent and mythic journey, one from which all stories will eventually emanate.
With hyperrealistic detail and classical composition, this work calls forth the dignity, sensuality, and strength of African antiquity often erased from mainstream historical narratives. The lush palms, temple architecture, and serene procession evoke not just a forgotten past, but a living spiritual inheritance.
This piece invites the viewer to dream beyond borders, beyond time—to remember that Black divinity was, and still is, carved in stone.
